A dog that was tied to a pole extended its paw toward the officer who had come to save it.
The gave her his paw in a gesture that seemed to communicate, “Please assist me in escaping from this place.”
Officer Angela Laurella of the Pompano, Florida Police Department got a call about two dogs who were tied to poles on a street that led nowhere last week.
It was hard to determine how long the dogs had been there or who had abandoned them because there were no cameras in the vicinity to record the events. But Officer Laurella was aware that time was of the essence as the temperature outside was quickly approaching one hundred degrees.
When she got there, she saw a weak gray dog that was tied to a pole so tightly that he could hardly move. She hurried over to help the dog.
Amy Roman, president and founder of 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, described the dog’s condition to The Dodo as follows: “He was chained to a pole with a very short leash.” “He was completely malnourished and dehydrated, and every bone and rib was visible through his skin.
The dog, who had recently been given the name Liam, extended his paw to the officer and bent his head in order to get petting. “She just moved near him very gently and stretched out her hand, and he kind of cowered and gave her his paw,” Roman added.
“It was as if he was asking her to help him get out of here.”
Officer Laurella could see that Liam’s life had not been easy and that he need particular care, so she went out to the rescue organization 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida for assistance.
Liam was welcomed without question by Roman, despite the fact that the rescue was already at capacity.
Following a series of appointments with the veterinarian, Liam is currently taking it easy at Roman’s place, where the 17-pound pocket bulldog is gradually regaining his strength and eating better than he ever has before.
Roman remarked, “He’s getting a lot of affection at all hours of the day and night.” “In order for his body to become accustomed to the regimen, he is fed on the hour, every hour… Because we have volunteers who are preparing large quantities of boiled chicken and rice, he is currently having the time of his life.
Liam has been a beacon of happiness ever since he was rescued, despite the fact that he still has a long road ahead of him and will have many meetings with the veterinarian in the future.
Roman described the dog by saying, “He loves everybody, and there is not a mean bone in this dog’s body.” “After everything that he’s been through, he’s still so appreciative and forgiving, and that says it all to me,” I said. “That says it all.”
Liam is just one of the numerous pets whose owners have recently given up on them or given them up for adoption in the state of Florida.
Roman has high expectations that pet owners will call out to rescues and shelters for assistance and resources before making the decision that they are unable to care for their animals any longer. This is because there are so many shelters that are already at or near capacity. And Liam is the living, breathing example of why every dog deserves a second shot in life.
Liam continues to extend his paw to strangers, demonstrating that he is prepared for a future with a warm and caring family despite everything that he has gone through.
Roman remarked, “I believe there is a lot that humanity can learn from animals like Liam,” and he specifically mentioned dogs. “It simply helps you regain your faith.”
