Dogs are part of the family, and they need the fresh air and sunshine just like their human counterparts. If you’re worried about how your dog spends his day while you’re at work or out of the house, then read on.

There are wonderful ways to take advantage of spending time outside with your dog and spending it in a way that benefits both of you.

1. Play Fetch

Playing fetch is one way of taking care of a dog at the same time have fun playing anywhere, indoors or outdoors. All you need is a ball, stick, toy, or any other kind of object your pup loves to chase.

You can start throwing it short distances and gradually increase the distance. As your pup’s fetching skills improve, this activity can become quite competitive. Your pup will love it and it’s a great way to give them a good workout and tire them out.

2. Go on a Hike

Going on a hike is one of the best ways to get outdoors and enjoy nature with your pup. Pick a nearby location with a rewarding trail and start planning your adventure.

A hike allows your pup to explore new smells, sounds, and sights, as well as get some much-needed exercise and mental stimulation. Be sure to pack some treats and a dog water bottle.

When on the trail, keep your pup on a leash and be aware of any wildlife in the area. Hiking can be an excellent way to bond with your pup and explore the natural outdoors.

3. Play Hide and Seek

Playing Hide and Seek is a fun game to keep your dog active and entertained. Start with your dog in one place, then find a location to hide.

Once you are ready, call your dog’s name and instruct them to “come find you!” Remaining in hiding, encourage them with your voice and small treats.

When your pup finds you, reward them with a big hug and lots of praise. The more you practice this game the better your pup will become. Continue challenging them with harder places to hide or with the addition of other family members to keep the game fun and exciting.

4. Teach Your Dog a New Trick

One fun activity would be to teach your dog a new trick or two. Start by teaching your dog simple commands such as “sit”, “down”, or “stay”.

As your dog starts to master these skills, increase the difficulty of the tricks. Incorporate hand signals or have your pup jump over small obstacles. Not only is this a great way to spend time with your puppy, but it will help your pup become more obedient and responsive.

5. Take Your Dog to the Dog Park

At the dog park, your pup can run around and play with other dogs, socialize, practice obedience skills, as well as just take a break and relax. It is also a great way to get some fresh air and exercise while having fun with your pup at the same time.

The dog park provides a safe place for them to roam around and be active while socializing with other dogs. Dogs can benefit from this type of play and time outside, as it gives them much needed mental and physical stimulation.

6. Play Tug-Of-War

Tug of war is a great way to build a bond with your pup and get them socializing with people and other dogs. All you need is a rope or a solid toy to play the game.

Don’t forget to always use verbal commands like, “take it” or “let go” to give your pup direction and practice obedience training. If you have two or more dogs, have them work together to play as a team.

Avoid using a rope that can break free or cause your pup to choke and never leave them unattended. Tug of War will make for a great time outside with your pup!

7. Give Your Dog a Puzzle Toy

Puzzle toys can range from hiding treats for them to find, to an interactive game requiring more complex strategies. Keeping your pup’s brain active can keep them from getting into mischief.

They are also a great way to keep them occupied for long periods of time. Puzzle toys are versatile and can be used in a variety of ways to make the game more challenging for your dog.

8. Take Your Dog Swimming

Taking your dog swimming is a great way to spend time outside with your canine companion. It’s a great way to get physical exercise while having fun.

Swimming is a low-impact exercise, so even elderly and overweight pets can enjoy it. Make sure you use a designated swimming spot that is safe and clean.

You’ll want to check the local regulations to make sure that the area allows dogs. Put a life jacket on your pup and don’t forget to bring some water-resistant toys.

You can play catch with a floating toy, as well as floating discs, and you can even bring a ball for them to chase while they swim. Make sure that you keep an eye on your pup at all times while they enjoy the water.
