The pitbull french bulldog mix was created by crossbreeding two different purebred dogs like the French Bulldog and the Pit Bull, a so-called “designer dog” was created.

Designer dogs, however, have been around since at least the early 1990s. Their ever-growing popularity suggests that they are here for the long haul.

13 things you need to know about the Pitbull French Bulldog Mix

1. Pitbull French Bulldog Mix History & Origin

The French Bulldog and the Pittbull are very different breeds, but their characteristics complement each other well.

In spite of the name, the French Bulldog originated in England. They were bred to be a toy-sized version of the English bulldog, a dog used in the sport of bull baiting.

When the blood sport was banned in 1835,1 the bulldog was bred into the French bulldog, which exists as a companion dog.

Pit bulls are also descendants of the old English bulldog. Bulldogs were crossed with terriers (bulls and terriers) because they needed a more agile and faster dog for ratting and dog fighting. This mix became known as the first Pit Bull Terrier.

Shortly after the Civil War, immigrants from the British Isles came to the United States, but along with their French Bulldogs and Pit Bulls. Here, the Pit Bull Terrier became known as the “American Pit Bull Terrier.”

The origin of the Pitbull French Bulldog Mix came from the so-called “designer dog” trend. The crossing of two pure breeds gained prominence in the 1990s after the first Labradoodle was created in Australia in 1989.2

It is not known when the first French Bulldog Pit Bull mix was bred, but it is clear that it was an attempt to reduce the fear of Pit Bull by creating something altogether cuter.

The Pitbull French Bulldog Mix became popular and the French Pit Bull provided a pleasant blend between these two very different breeds.

3. Pitbull Dog Origins

Although the Pitbull also originated in England, their history is much less pleasant.

These dogs were created by crossing terriers and bulldogs to fight staked bulls.

Fortunately, the blood sport was banned in 1835. These dogs appeared in the United States in the mid-19th century.

American breeders developed a larger dog than the English version, which was used as a working farm dog.

However, the pit bull is still plagued by its reputation as a harsh and even violent breed today.

4. Things to know about the French Bulldog Pit Bull mix.

The most famous feature of the French Bulldog is its characteristic “bat ears”. Originally, their ears were “pink” and more closely resembled those of the English Bulldog.

In the era known as the “Belle Époque”, the French Bulldog was the preferred companion of the Parisian “Belle de Nuit” or ladies of the evening. Pitbulls appeared on the cover of Life magazine three times; more than any other breed of dog.

Although their jaws are very strong, the Pit Bull does not have “locking jaws”.

5. Pitbull French Bulldog Mix Appearance

Pitbull French Bulldog Mix puppies can look like one parent more than the other, or be a mix of both.

These dogs have some similar physical characteristics. As a result, you can expect their offspring to have a compact, muscular build, large head and short coat.

The French Bulldog is available in white, cream or fawn, while the Pit Bull can be seen in all colors and patterns.

The French Bulldog stands from 11 to 13 inches and weighs under 28 pounds.

American Staffordshire Terriers are considerably to be larger, standing at 17 to 19 inches and weighing between 40 and 70 pounds.

The Frenchie resembles a miniature version of the English Bulldog, but with the signature erect “bat ears.” Like their larger cousin, they have an oversized square head and an extremely short muzzle, which means they are a brachycephalic dog.

This leads to some serious health problems, which we will explore shortly.

The Pitbull French Bulldog Mix has a well defined jaw and cheekbones and wide set dark eyes. Although extremely muscular, it is very agile and graceful in its movements.

6. Training your dogs

By having a high-energy dog that will be quite muscular, you need to make sure that you have the best in training.

You will definitely find it quite easy to work with your pitbull french bulldog mix dog. Not only will your dog be very intelligent and eager to learn, he will also be very happy to spend time with you.

If you keep his training constant and reinforce it positively, you will be able to build the trust relationship that is an essential part of living with such a wonderful dog, who can also be a bit sensitive.

7. Exercise

The exercise requirements for your pitbull french bulldog mix vary considerably between these two breeds.

A short daily walk or outdoor play session is sufficient for the Frenchie. Because of their flat face, they often have serious breathing problems.

For this reason, they cannot be overly exercised and should not be outside at all when it is hot and humid. The right exercise program for your Frenchie depends on its conformation.

On the other hand, the pit bull is much more athletic. They require a lot of exercise and since they are so people-oriented, they should include long play sessions with their owner.

These intelligent dogs are often well suited for dog sports.

8. French Bulldog Pit Bull Mix Health

Unfortunately, the poor French Bulldog has more than its fair share of health concerns, and many of them stem from how they look.

As mentioned earlier, brachycephaly makes breathing difficult, but it also leads to other health problems, including eye conditions like corneal ulcers and dental problems.

French Bulldogs also have chondrodystrophy, a form of dwarfism defined by their short legs.

This puts them at high risk for disc disease, which can cause pain, nerve damage and, in severe cases, paralysis.

That little corkscrew tail that looks so cute is known as a screw tail and can also cause severe back problems in the breed.

In terms of health, the pit bull does much better, but is still predisposed to certain conditions.

Breeders should have their breeding stock screened for hip dysplasia, heart disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, eye disease, and cerebellar ataxia.

The lifespan of the French Bulldog is 10 to 12 years and 12 to 16 years for the Pit Bull.

9. How to care and feed your Pitbull French Bulldog Mix

Caring for your French Bulldog Pitbull mix is as low maintenance as possible.

Their very short coats only require weekly brushing to remove dead hair and distribute natural oils to keep the coat healthy.

If your puppy has the facial folds of the Frenchie, they should be kept clean and dry to prevent infection.

As with all breeds, the Pitbull French Bulldog Mix requires a high quality food that is appropriate for their age.

Both breeds are prone to obesity. So be careful with calories, including treats during training.

Extra pounds put this dog at higher risk for the conformation problems mentioned above.
