Dog Owners Advised to Avoid Feeding Deli Meats Amid Deadly Listeria Outbreak

A deadly listeria outbreak linked to deli meats has prompted a nationwide warning for dog owners to avoid feeding their pets deli products. The outbreak has resulted in at least two deaths and 28 hospitalizations across 12 states.

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is still investigating the specific products involved, many people in this outbreak have reported eating contaminated meats sliced at deli counters[1]. Listeria, a serious food poisoning bacteria, can also pose a danger to dogs.

“Listeria can indeed affect dogs, and infections can be serious or fatal,” warned Dr. Georgia Jeremiah, co-founder of dog wellness company Wag!. “Puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with weaker immune systems are more susceptible to serious infections.”

While a small amount of deli meat as an occasional treat is typically not harmful, experts advise avoiding it altogether during an outbreak like this. “Just like with humans, contaminated food is the main risk factor,” said Dr. Jeremiah.

The CDC has issued specific guidance for vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, and adults over 65. They recommend not eating deli meats unless they are reheated to an internal temperature of 165°F or steaming hot.

Listeria is estimated to sicken around 1,600 people annually, with approximately 260 deaths. The bacteria can be particularly dangerous for dogs with weaker immune systems.

Pet owners are advised to stick to healthier treat options like cooked lean meats, blueberries, carrots, and dog treats made with wholesome ingredients in moderation.
