In a touching turn of events, a chihuahua mix named Gizmo, who vanished nine years ago, has been reunited with his owner in Las Vegas, thanks to a kind-hearted stranger and a microchip.
Gizmo, who escaped from a backyard in the southwest valley of Las Vegas as a young puppy, was found and identified recently, bringing joy and relief to his long-waiting owner, Judith Monarrez.
The reunion was set in motion when Monarrez received an unexpected email notifying her that Gizmo had been found. Acting quickly, she contacted the Animal Emergency Center of Las Vegas and Henderson, where the veterinary team confirmed Gizmo’s identity through his microchip.
The saga began nearly a decade ago when Gizmo and two other dogs managed to slip away from Monarrez’s backyard. While the other two dogs were quickly recovered with a neighbor’s help, Gizmo was taken by someone passing by, leading to years of fruitless searching, including a dedicated Facebook group to find him.
The breakthrough came last week when an emergency veterinarian scanned Gizmo’s microchip, revealing the crucial information needed to contact Monarrez.
“They told me a lady, a good Samaritan, had spent two months trying to catch him before bringing him in,” Monarrez said. “She wanted to keep him, but once they scanned his microchip, they knew he belonged to us. It’s amazing—something we hoped for years ago.”
Now 11 years old, Gizmo is back home and under Monarrez’s care, slowly recovering from several health issues. To help with Gizmo’s veterinary expenses, Monarrez has started a GoFundMe campaign.
