This little Australian Shepherd is the answer to many dog lovers’ prayers. These little canines make great pets. If you think this is the right dog breed for you, there is a lot of important background information that anyone considering adoption should know.

The Welsh Corgi

The Welsh Corgi, sometimes known as the Corgi, is a small type of herding dog that originated in Wales. Two different types of breeds are recognized: One is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and second is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

There are some physical differences between the two. According to breed standards, the Cardigan is larger overall, both in weight and size. Their tails have different shapes; docking had been used previously.

The Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi became increasingly popular because the Queen personally owned more than 30 Pembrokes or Corgi Dachshund crosses known as Dorgis.

Historically, the Pembroke has been attributed to the influx of dogs alongside Flemish weavers from around the 10th century, while the Cardigan is believed to be attributed to dogs brought with Nordic settlers, particularly a common ancestor of the Swedish Vallhund.

The Pembroke is known to be the most popular of the two, but still appears on the Kennel Club’s list of endangered dog breeds in the UK.

Thank you to its parents, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Australian Shepherd. Two incredibly popular dog breeds in their own right. Together you get the best of both worlds!

The Auggie’s other parents, the Corgi’s origins, go way back to the 11th century in Wales. During this time, the Corgi was also bred as a herding dog. Because of its small stature, it was the perfect dog to keep on the heels of livestock to keep them in line and where they should be.

1. Their origins of the Corgi date back to the 10th century, when they were descended from either the Swedish Vallhunds or the modern-day Schipperkes.

2. The origin of the name “Corgi” is difficult to determine, but we know that the suffix “gi” means dog, while the prefix “cor” refers to either “guard” or “dwarf”.

3. There is another type of corgi, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which has some very distinct differences from the Pembroke Welsh Corgi across the spectrum.

4. There’s a myth that has it that these dogs used to pull trainers for fairies, and you can even see the infamous “fairy saddle” on their shoulders.

5. In the early days of Amazon, Rufus, a Welsh Pembroke corgi, served as the company’s mascot.

Auggie Puppy Temperament

Mini Auggie puppies have great dog temperaments and make great pets for someone who is looking for a dog that won’t grow very large, is easy to train, and loves and adores their human family.

Because of their ancestry, the Auggie puppy has some personality traits that are easily identified as coming from a herding dog. They are hardworking, tenacious, intelligent and easily trained.

They are incredibly aware of their surroundings and always on alert. That being said, it may sound like they are an aggressive breed of dog, but they are actually one of the friendlier breeds. When your Aussie-Corgi puppy meets a new person, you may immediately believe that they are only present to befriend them.

Considering how independent and stubborn these puppies can be, it is important to train them well on the leash while they are young. This is important because if they ever fall off the leash or if you ever want to take them to an off-leash park to run around, you want to be sure they don’t take off on you.

Are Auggies hypoallergenic?

Auggies are definitely not hypoallergenic dogs due to their Australian Shepherd associated ancestry. Aussies are one of the best dogs out there. Corgis are not a hypoallergenic breed either. That means Auggies had no chance of being born as a hypoallergenic dog breed.

Do Auggies have health problems?

There are several common health issues that Auggies are known to face, but otherwise they are fairly healthy dog breeds. Some of the most common health issues Auggies face as a breed are epilepsy, canine hip dysplasia, blindness, or even deafness. This is why regular visits to the vet are important. This way, any type of health issue your Auggie pup is at risk for can be addressed and corrected immediately.

Training an Auggie Dog?

Because of their herding dog genetics, they are incredibly independent and stubborn, but also extremely trainable. It just takes the right owner/trainer who has the patience to train an Auggie puppy. It is well known that Auggie puppies with a reward system respond well to positive feedback. Auggie puppies, just like any other puppy, love treats and verbal praise when they have done a good job.

Caring for an Auggie puppy

Their diet will change as they get older, but as a puppy, be sure you are providing them with the best nutrition, such as a grain-free diet for dogs. Talk to your veterinarian if you’re not sure which puppy food is best for your Auggie. Just be sure you’re providing them with the right nutrients to replenish all that these energetic pups can consume each day.

Auggie puppies also need proper grooming and hygiene to keep up with their thick coats. Both of the Auggie’s parents are known for their lush fur coats. That means the Auggie has inherited that thick fur coat. A coat that often falls off especially with annual seasonal changes. It’s important to keep up with grooming at a young age so your Auggie pup can become accustomed to this routine.

Searching for an Australian Corgi Breeder

The best way to begin your journey to find your best Australian Corgi friend is to search for breeders online. Since he’s a relatively new puppy on the designer scene, you’ll probably have to travel to meet a breeder, but he’ll be totally worth it when you find him! Make sure you do your research and meet the breeder and puppies in person before making a decision.

A reputable breeder will only breed healthy pooches, especially those with good hip scores and passed eye tests. So don’t be afraid to ask for his parents’ health certificates.

Rescue & Protection

If you’re thinking about rescuing an Australian Shepherd-Corgi mix rather than buying one from a breeder, the best place to find it is at dedicated breed rescue centers, simply because it’s relatively rare. While many people pay a premium for this mix, you can definitely get lucky and find them at breeders near you. The Corgi Aid website, as well as the Australian Shepherd Rescue website, lists adoptable dogs from state to state, as well as rescue contact information.

Final Conclusion

Auggie puppies make great pets for families looking for a dog that has remained small and lovable throughout their lives. With the beautiful color patterns of the Australian Shepherd and the small stature and energetic personality of the Corgi combined to create this breed, the Auggie is the result of two amazing dogs.
