Korean dog finds its way home 41 days after going missing

A heartwarming tale emerged recently as a one-year-old Korean Jindo named Hong-min defied the odds by finding his way back home 41 days after disappearing. This remarkable journey captured attention as the young pup traversed unfamiliar terrain to reunite with his owner in Daejeon.

Hong-min, lovingly named after soccer star Son Heung-min by his owner Yoon Jeong-sang, vanished during a dog convention in Moksang-dong on March 24. Startled by the commotion of loudspeakers and barking dogs, the then 11-month-old fled, leaving Mr. Yoon frantic in his search efforts.

Despite exhaustive attempts involving local authorities and shelters, hopes dwindled for Hong-min’s safe return, given the considerable distance from home and the unfamiliar surroundings.

However, on May 3, a glimmer of hope emerged when Mr. Yoon heard familiar barks near his junkyard. Approaching cautiously, he was elated to discover his beloved pet, slightly weathered but otherwise unharmed.

Remarkably, despite his month-long journey, Hong-min had managed to maintain his health, requiring only treatment for ticks acquired during his adventure.

After a few days of rest, the resilient pup bounced back, demonstrating his intelligence and gentle nature, traits characteristic of Jindo dogs.

Indigenous to South Korea’s Jindo Island in South Jeolla province, Jindo dogs are renowned for their loyalty and intelligence, with tales abound of their remarkable journeys to reunite with their owners. In a similar vein, Jinsuni, another Jindo dog, made headlines in 2000 for repeatedly finding her way home despite being taken far from Yongin to Gochang.

This heartening story serves as a testament to the enduring bond between humans and their loyal companions, showcasing the remarkable resilience and determination of Hong-min and his canine kin.
