A New City, New York resident had a harrowing close call when lightning struck a tree in his yard as severe weather swept through the region on Wednesday, July 17.

 

Close Call During Severe Storm

Matt Krass, a resident of New City, was taking a leisurely walk with his dog when a sudden lightning bolt struck a tree in his backyard. The incident, captured by his home’s surveillance camera, shows the extreme weather and the narrow escape.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued

The National Weather Service had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the region earlier in the day, predicting strong winds and hail.

The storm caused significant disruptions, including the suspension of flight operations at LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark airports. Extensive flooding was also reported in various areas throughout the region.

 

Lightning Strike Statistics

Over the past eight years, three people in the U.S. have been fatally struck by lightning while walking their dogs, according to the National Lightning Safety Council. This recent event in New City highlights the dangers of severe weather and the importance of taking warnings seriously.
