Kazakh Scientists Uncover Genetic Secrets of the Tazy Hunting Dog Breed

Last Updated on July 25, 2024 by Dogs Vets

ASTANA – The Tazy hunting dog, an ancient breed deeply embedded in Kazakhstan’s cultural and genetic heritage, has recently been placed firmly on the phylogenetic map after enduring a genetic bottleneck approximately 50 generations ago.

This revelation was made by Professor Bakytzhan Bekmanov, a Candidate of Biological Sciences, according to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education on July 23.

The Tazy, celebrated as a national treasure in Kazakhstan, has long held a mysterious genetic structure. A breakthrough study by the Institute of Genetics and Physiology, utilizing advanced molecular genetic methods, has shed light on this enigma.

The research project, initiated in 2021 and led by Candidate of Biological Sciences and senior researcher Anastasiya Perfilyeva, concluded in 2023. The project was funded by a grant awarded to the research team.

“The analysis demonstrated that the Tazy is a unique breed characterized by high genetic diversity and low levels of inbreeding,” said Bekmanov. “This genetic richness is most prominent in southern and eastern Kazakhstan, with a somewhat lesser extent in the northern regions.”

Researchers discovered five specific regions on chromosomes 18, 22, and 25 that may be key to the Tazy’s exceptional hunting and working abilities. Among the 12 candidate genes identified within these regions, the CAB39L gene is particularly noteworthy for its potential role in enhancing the breed’s speed and endurance.

These findings not only pave the way for the future improvement and conservation of the Tazy breed but also bolster efforts to gain international recognition of the Tazy as a distinct and valuable breed.

The study’s insights promise to open new avenues for genetic research and conservation strategies, ensuring that this ancient breed continues to thrive and maintain its significant role in Kazakhstan’s heritage.
