Grenada Lake, Mississippi — A leisurely fishing trip took a dramatic turn when two friends and a local fishing guide found themselves in the midst of a rescue mission.
What began as a routine outing at Grenada Lake became a heroic effort to save 38 stranded dogs.
Bob Gist, 61, from Arkansas, and his friend Brad Carlisle from Tennessee had planned a day of fishing to catch up after a long time apart. Joined by Jordan Chrestman, a local guide, the trio set out with high hopes of a successful day on the water.
However, their fishing adventure quickly transformed into an unexpected and urgent rescue operation.
After spending a few hours in a fruitless fishing spot, the group relocated to a different area of the lake. It was there that they heard the distant sound of barking.
“We moved about half a mile from our previous location and started fishing again,” Gist recounted. “Soon, we could hear barking, and that’s when we realized something was wrong.”
To their astonishment, the team discovered dozens of dogs struggling in the water, unable to find their way back to shore. These weren’t just any dogs; they were hunting hounds equipped with GPS collars, a detail that helped the rescuers later identify their origin.
The dogs had been part of an annual fox hunt that had gone awry, chasing a deer into the lake.
Without hesitation, the men sprang into action. They carefully pulled the exhausted dogs into their boat, initially rescuing around 25 to 27 dogs.
They made multiple trips to shore, where the distressed owners awaited. A local resident, equipped with a GPS tracker, joined the rescue to help locate the remaining dogs, some of whom were on the brink of drowning after treading water for over an hour.

“The dogs were so frightened they didn’t want to leave the boat,” Gist said. “It was a struggle to get them out because they were scared of going back into the water.” In total, the trio managed to rescue 38 dogs, who were finally safe and reunited with their owners.
Chrestman, the local fishing guide, was praised for his swift action. Despite offers of monetary rewards from grateful dog owners, he declined, focusing solely on the well-being of the animals.
This remarkable rescue serves as a testament to the unexpected heroism that can arise in even the most ordinary situations.
