Dog ownership comes with an abundance of advice — from well-meaning friends, social media, and even strangers at the park. While some of it is helpful, many long-standing beliefs about canine health are outdated, incomplete, or simply incorrect. Relying on these myths can delay proper care, lead to unnecessary worry, or result in decisions that are not in your dog’s best interest.
Below, we examine some of the most common dog health myths, explain why they persist, and present the current evidence-based understanding according to veterinary science.
1. A Dry or Warm Nose Means Your Dog Is Sick
The Myth: A healthy dog always has a cold, wet nose. A dry or warm nose is a reliable sign of illness.
The Reality: Nose moisture and temperature naturally fluctuate throughout the day. Factors such as sleep, ambient humidity, recent activity, and individual variation all influence how a dog’s nose feels. A dry nose by itself is rarely diagnostic of disease.
Veterinarians emphasize that more meaningful indicators of illness include lethargy, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, changes in drinking or urination, or noticeable shifts in behavior. A persistently cracked, painful, or discolored nose warrants veterinary attention, but moisture level alone does not.

2. Dogs Eat Grass Because They Are Sick or Trying to Induce Vomiting
The Myth: Grass-eating is a sign that a dog has an upset stomach and is attempting to make itself vomit.

3. A Dog’s Mouth Is Cleaner Than a Human’s Mouth
The Myth: Dog saliva is cleaner than human saliva and may even have healing properties.
The Reality: Both human and canine mouths harbor large numbers of bacteria, but the specific species differ. A dog’s mouth is not inherently cleaner. Some bacteria present in canine saliva can potentially cause infection in humans if they enter an open wound. While dog saliva contains certain enzymes with mild antibacterial activity, it is not sterile.
Regular dental care remains important for dogs, just as it is for people. Periodontal disease is one of the most common health issues in adult dogs and can affect overall systemic health.
4. Grain-Free Diets Are Healthier for All Dogs
The Myth: Grains are unnecessary fillers or common allergens, so grain-free diets are superior for every dog.
The Reality: Most dogs digest grains effectively, and true grain allergies are relatively uncommon. Beginning in 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated a potential association between certain diets — many of them grain-free and high in legumes such as peas and lentils — and cases of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs, including breeds not typically predisposed to the condition.
The relationship appears complex and is still not fully understood. The FDA has noted that many reported cases involved diets with high levels of pulse ingredients. Current veterinary guidance generally recommends choosing complete and balanced diets appropriate for the individual dog, preferably with input from a veterinarian, rather than assuming grain-free is inherently better.

5. Dogs Only Need Veterinary Care When They Appear Sick
The Myth: Healthy-looking dogs do not require routine veterinary visits.
The Reality: Many significant health conditions develop gradually and may not produce obvious external signs until they are advanced. Dental disease, early kidney or liver dysfunction, heart conditions, endocrine disorders, and certain cancers can progress quietly. Regular wellness examinations, including laboratory screening when appropriate, allow for earlier detection and intervention, which typically improves outcomes and can reduce long-term costs.
Most veterinary organizations recommend at least annual examinations for adult dogs and more frequent visits for puppies and senior dogs.
6. Indoor Dogs Do Not Need Heartworm or Flea/Tick Prevention
The Myth: Dogs that primarily stay indoors face little risk from parasites.
The Reality: Mosquitoes (the intermediate host for heartworm) readily enter homes. Fleas and ticks can be carried indoors on clothing, other animals, or through open doors and windows. Heartworm disease is serious, potentially fatal, and largely preventable. Year-round preventive medication is widely recommended in regions where these parasites occur.
7. A Wagging Tail Always Means a Happy Dog
The Myth: Tail wagging is a universal signal of friendliness and happiness.
The Reality: Tail carriage and movement form part of a broader communication system. The height, speed, stiffness, and direction of the wag, combined with the rest of the dog’s body language, determine its meaning. A high, stiff, rapid wag can indicate high arousal or potential aggression, while a low or tucked position often signals fear or uncertainty. Context is essential for accurate interpretation.
8. You Can Accurately Determine a Dog’s Age by Examining Its Teeth
The Myth: Dental appearance provides a precise way to age a dog.
The Reality: Tooth eruption patterns can help estimate age in young puppies, but once adult teeth are fully present, dental condition becomes a poor indicator of chronological age. Diet, chewing habits, genetics, and the quality of dental care all strongly influence how teeth look over time. Dental examinations remain valuable for assessing oral health, not for determining exact age.
