Survey Finds Majority of Americans Disapprove of Kristi Noem Shooting Her Dog

According to the latest Economist/YouGov survey, a significant majority of Americans find South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s actions, as detailed in her forthcoming book, to be “unacceptable.” Noem has faced considerable backlash after revealing that she euthanized her 14-month-old ranch dog, Cricket, by shooting it in the head.

In her book, Noem described Cricket as having an “aggressive personality” and recounted an incident where the dog allegedly attacked a neighbor’s chickens and even turned on her when she intervened. She defended her decision to end Cricket’s life, portraying it as a difficult but necessary action.

Despite her attempts to justify her actions, the survey indicates that 67 percent of respondents who were aware of the incident deemed her actions as “unacceptable.” Only 15 percent viewed it as acceptable, with 18 percent expressing uncertainty.

Interestingly, the disapproval cuts across party lines, with a plurality of Republicans (37 percent), along with clear majorities of independents (66 percent) and Democrats (89 percent), finding her actions unacceptable.

The survey, conducted from May 5 to May 7, 2024, polled 1,813 adult citizens.

Governor Noem has remained steadfast in her defense, characterizing Cricket as “extremely dangerous” and emphasizing the challenging decisions she has had to make in her life.
